Eugenio Martínez Celdrán

Eugenio Martínez Celdrán (Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia) 1947) is Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Barcelona and Director of the Laboratory of Phonetics of the Faculty of Philology since its creation in 1978. He has published numerous articles in journals (RSEL, EFA, JIPA, Verba, LEA, RFE, etc.). He has been and currently is the main researcher in research projects related to phonetics, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. He is  the author of several books among which: Fonética (Teide, 1984, 4ª ed. 1994), Fonología General y Española (Teide, 1989), Fonética experimental (Síntesis, 1991), El sonido en la comunicación humana (Octaedro, 1996, 2nd ed. 2003); Análisis espectrográfico de los sonidos del habla (Ariel, 1998, 2nded. 2007) and Manual de Fonética Española (Ariel, 2007), written with A. Ma. Fernández Planas. In recent years, he has worked well coordinated with chapters in books by other authors, for example, M. Alvar, Introducción a la Lingüística Española (Ariel, 2000); P. Prieto, Teorías de la entonación (Ariel, 2003); E. Herrera y P. M. Butragueño, La tonía: dimensiones fonéticas y fonológicas (El Colegio de México, 2003); M. Contini, Projet Amper. Atlas multimédia prosodique de l’Espace roman (Université Stendhal-Grenoble 3, 2005) and J. Dorta et al. Fundamentos epistemológicos y metodológicos de la historiografía lingüística en el ámbito hispánico (Arco/Libros, 2007). He is also the founder and editor of the journal Estudios de Fonética Experimental, published by the Laboratory of Phonetics of the University of Barcelona.

Ana Ma. Fernández Planas

PhD in Linguistics
Technical Manager of the Laboratory of Phonetics

PhD in Linguistics from the University of Barcelona since 2001 with the thesis titled Estudio electropalatográfico de la coarticulación vocálica en estructuras VCV en castellano. Since 1991 she works at the Laboratory of Phonetics of the UB, where she became the technical manager in 1998. Since 2008 she is Professor at the Department of Linguistics, where she has taught the following subjects: "Linguistics", "Introduction to Linguistics," "Experimental Phonetics", "Laboratory Phonology", and "Phonetics". She is the coordinator of the Catalan section of the Multimedia Atlas of Romance Prosody. She teaches in various PhD, MA, postgraduate and specialization courses. She has spublished several books and articles in journals such as: Estudios de Fonética Experimental, Verba, Caplletra, Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Estudis Romànics, Onomázein, Géolinguistique, Head and Neck, Aphasiology, among others. Her works focus on articulatory phonetics, acoustics and perception. They address segmental and suprasegmentals issues, as well as some applications of phonetics in forensic issues, speech therapy and otorhinolaryngology.

Jesús Bach-Marquès

PhD candidate in Catalan Linguistics

Degree in Modern Languages and Literatures (Catalan & English) at the University of Barcelona (2015). Master in Teacher Training in Compulsory Secondary and Upper Secondary School Education, Vocational Training and Languages (UB, 2016). He is currently a PhD candidate intern at the Catalan Linguistics Section due to an FI grant, and he teaches at the Degree in Communication and Industrial Cultures. His research fields are mainly segmental and suprasegmental phonetics, second-language pronunciation teaching and language history. Coordinator and translator of the interface Guies de Pronunciació del Català.


Josefina Carrera Sabaté

PhD in Catalan Linguistics
Professor of Catalan Philology

PhD in Catalan Philology at the University of Barcelona (1999). Master in Language and Hearing Disturbance (UB 2001). Her research fields are mainly sociophonetics, prosody and teaching and applications of phonetics. She has published Escola catalana i variació fonètica (2002), with Ana M. Fernández, Vocals mitjanes tòniques del català. Estudi contrastiu interdialectal (2005), and, with Rosa Estopà and Imma Creus, EnRaonar. Lingüística general i aplicada per a la pràctica logopèdica (2010). She is the author of several scientific articles in national and international journals, and has participated in miscellaneous puclications such as Oralment. Estudis de Variació funcional (1998), that recieved the award "A. M. Badia i Margarit" of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1994). She has collaborated to the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics (2005) and has participated in publications such as Variation in Indigenous Minority Languages (2009). Since 2003 she is the director of the electronic journal Llengua Societat i Comunicació (LSC). In the field of didactics of phonetics, she has published Fonètica pràctica del català oriental central i nord-occidental ([1995] 2001), with Ana M. Fernández, Prácticas de transcripción fonética en castellano (2001), and, with Joan Solà i Clàudia Pons, she has directed the website Els sons del català (2009). Since 1995 she has participated in funded research projects that are connected to the phonetic and linguistic variation and segmental suprasegmentals and she also has participated in teaching innovation projects since 2001. Since 1994 she is professor in the Department of Catalan at the University of Barcelona and between 2000 and 2004, also has been teaching at the University of Lleida. She teaches courses on Catalan language, descriptive grammar, oral language and phonetics.


Joan Carles Mora Bonilla

PhD in English Philology (University of Barcelona, 2001), Joan C. Mora is a lecturer and researcher in the department of English in the University of Barcelona, Spain. His research has examined the role of contextual and individual factors in the development of L2 speech and oral fluency, and the acquisition of L2 phonology. His current research interests focus on the role of input in bilingual phonological acquisition and the effect of individual differences in cognitive ability on L2 speech learning. His interests also include phonetic training methods, the teaching of English pronunciation to Spanish/Catalan learners of English, and the development of L2 phonological awareness in SLA.

PhD in Cognitive Science and Language at the Universitat de Barcelona in 2016. Previously, she obtained a MA in Lexis and Communication (2012) and BA in Hispanic Studies in (2011). She is a member of the Amper-Cat technologies project. She has taught Forensic Linguistics (Universität Osnabrück, 2016) and Experimental Phonetics (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, 2015). She also has been a visiting student at KU Leuven (Belgium). She has been lecturer of linguistics at the Universitat de Barcelona, at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Her research interests include  both theoretical and Applied Phonetics. Her theoretical research deals with the syntax-prosody interface. Currently she is particularly interested in the integration of prosody in construction grammar models. In applied phonetics, she designs computational solutions to address issues in forensic and clinical phonetics.

Dr. Balocco Simone is Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona (Spain), a department of mathematics and computer science and a senior researcher at the Center for Computer Vision (CVC), Bellaterra. He received the title of doctor in Acoustics in the CREATIS laboratory, Lyon 1 University, Lyon (France) and Electronics and Telecommunications obtained in the MSD Lab of the University of Florence (Italy). His main lines of research are the study of deep machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automated pattern recognition techniques applied to phonetic and medical image analyses.

Paolo Roseano

PhD in Sociology at the University of Trieste (Italy) in 2004 an PhD in Linguistics at the University of Barcelona. From 1999 to 2004 he worked as a researcher at the Istituto di Sociologia Internazionale di Gorizia, where he studies sociolinguistic aspects of ethnic minority groups. He works at the Laboratory of Phonetics of the University of Barcelona since 2007, where he collaborates within the framework on the project Multimedia Atlas of Romance Prosody. Since 2008 is also part of the Grup d’Estudis de Prosòdia of the Pompeu Fabra University. At present he is professor at the University of Barcelona and research fellow of the University of South Africa. His research interests include prosody of the Romance languages​​ and language contact, as well as phonetics and morphology of Friulian.

Juan María Garrido Almiñana is Associate Professor at the Department of Spanish Language and General Linguistics of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). His specialisation areas are Spanish, General and Applied Linguistics, with a special focus on Phonetics, Phonology and Speech Technologies. His research activity has been moving between basic and applied research. His main research areas are the phonetic description of Prosody, the design and collection of speech corpora, the development of speech processing tools and the application of linguistic and phonetic knowledge to Speech Technologies.

Ramon Cerdà Massó

Emeritus full professor (chair) at the Linguistics Department since 2011. Linguistics chair of the University of Barcelona (1986-2011). Previously, chair of Spanish at the University of Barcelona (1981-86) and visiting professor and, later, full professor at Illinois University at Chicago Circle (1975-76 i 1978-79). He has been the Spanish representative at the European project EUROTRA which dealt with automatic translation (1986-1992) and president of the Spanish Society of Linguistics (1994-1999). He has published more than 100 papers, books, translations and dictionaries.

Sabela Labraña Barrero

PhD in linguistics

MA in Primary Education by the University of Santiago de Compostela (1974) and BA in Romance Philology (Galician-Portuguese) by the University of Barcelona (1988). Dhe obtained a doctorate in linguistics with the thesis Estudio acostico das consonantes fricativas do galego ( 2005). She adapted to Galician the handbook Introducción á fonética. O son na comunicación humana by Eugenio Martínez Celdrán (2002). Among her works in the field of acoustic phonetics, An acoustic approach to the Galician gheada stands out (ICPS 15, 2003).


Chia-wen Yeh

PhD in Cognitive Science and Language

Chia-wen joined the PhD program in Cognitive Science and Language in 2014 after completing her MA in Spanish Language and Culture in Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. She received her BA in Spanish with a minor in English from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages. She also completed the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Program in 2012. Her main research interests include Taiwan Mandarin vowels and Chinese pronunciation for Catalan speakers. Her thesis advisors have been Ana Ma. Fernández-Planas (UB) and Maximiliano Cortés (Fu Jen Catholic University). She discussed her PhD thesis on Chinese vowels in 2017.
